A summary of the process is:

April 23 - Official classification for any athletes who need it
April 25 - Official practice
April 26 - 72 arrow 70 meter round
April 27 - 72 arrow 70 meter round (Top 8 archers in each event will advance to Round Robin matches)
April 28 - Round Robin matches
April 29 - Paralympic Ambassador Program for all athletes named to the team

Points will be given for ranking in the 70 meter rounds. Bonus points will be awarded for high scores (see chart on trials document)
Each archer will shoot 7 round robin matches. They will get points for twelve arrow scores (see chart on trials document). Six arrow end averages will be calculated and points given for ranking.

Ranking points from 144 Arrow ranking round = max of 5 points
Ranking bonus points from 72 Arrow ranking rounds = max of 4 points
Round robin bonus points = max of 7 points
Six arrow end ranking points = max of 5 points
Total points available = 21

What is a Minimum Qualifying Score?

For some events (including the Paralympics) athletes need to shoot a minimum score before they can participate. For the Paralympic Games, these scores need to be shot at a Star FITA between January 1, 2010 and the end of the ranking round at the Paralympic Team Trials.

Classification in the USA is usually done at one or two events each year. You can also make arrangements to have it done on your own. There is only one classifier in the USA; he is in Louisville, Kentucky.

Classification is not required when you first start shooting and classificaon is not required to attend training camps and local tournaments. National classification is required in order to shoot in the para classes at national events - including USAT and para selection events.

National classification is done by one classifier. It is a functional evaluation; based on what function you have, not necessarily what your disability is. For some people, it is quick and easy; for others, it may take longer and be more painful.

At the first international event an athlete attends, the athlete will be internationally classified. What do I need to do to make the 2012 Paralympic Team?


1 - Shoot the minimum qualifying score (MQS) between Jan 1, 2011 and April 25, 2011
Can be done at any FITA or 70 meter round that is registered as a Star FITA
2 - Have a national classification
Can be done in Chula Vista before the Trials or you can call and arrange to do it on your own
3 - Shoot in the Paralympic Team Trials, April 25-28 in Chula Vista, CA
You need to register and pay the registration fee
You need to finish in the top of your division; within the number of slots available (2 Men’s Compound Open; 1 Men’s Compound W1: 1 Men’s Recurve Standing; 1 Men’s Recurve W2; 1 Women’s Recurve Standing)]]>
